Man Rescued After Falling Down Cliffside

2013-06-30 18.19On Sunday, June 30th at 1627hrs the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police responded to Henry Hudson Drive, south of the Alpine Boat Basin for a reported victim who fell into the Greenbrook Falls. 

Upon arrival, officers found a female who stated that her husband had fallen from the Greenrbook Falls overpass to the cliff below.  Officers visually located the victim (later identified as Mr. Julio Beltran, age 49 of Fairview NJ) as well as a non-injured person (later identified as Juan Martinez, age 36 from Cliffside Park NJ)who had scaled below to assist the injured person.  Closter EMS and Rescue, the East Bergen Rappel Team, and Englewood Paramedics were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Rescue personnel reached the victim quickly and the victim was removed a short time later and transported to Hackensack University Medical Center via Atlantic Air-1 Medevac.  Mr. Beltran received multiple traumatic injuries of unknown severity.  Mr. Martinez, who had scaled the cliff to assist the original victim was not injured and walked away from the scene after being removed by the rappel teams.  One firefighter (identified as Battalion Chief Chris Ipek of the Fort Lee NJ Fire Department) received minor injuries during the rescue after he fell several feet before his rope line captured him.

Officers' investigation revealed that the victim had intentionally walked around the bridge wall when he then slipped and fell.
